Root Canal
The Basics of a Root Canal

Here at The Tooth Booth Family Dental Clinic in Fraser, MI, our goal is to provide the absolute best dental care solutions we can for our patients. Root canals are part of our many dental procedures, but what are they and why are they required?
What is a Root Canal?
Teeth are made up of three distinct layers:
- Enamel – the hard-outer layer
- Dentine – a softer middle section
- Pulp – the inner, living tissue located in the root canal
When dental decay allows bacteria into the pulp of a tooth, infection sets in, causing extreme pain which often results in the inability to eat without pain. A root canal removes this infected tissue from the tooth.
Why are Root Canals Important?
When there is an infection within the tooth’s inner tissue, extreme, unpredictable pain can cause major interruptions in the person’s life, including their ability to eat enough food and nutrients. Relieving this pain plays a large role in why people should get a root canal.
Removing the infection, however, is vital to the patient’s overall wellbeing and health. When an infection is ignored, pus can build up at the root of a tooth, creating an abscess. This abscess further increases pain levels and can potentially prove fatal.
